Netflix’s Upcoming French Drama ‘Cuties’ Sparks Outrage On Twitter For S*xualizing Young Girls

Netflix is all set to release a new French film, Cuties (Mignonnes in French). Two days since its trailer release, the film is creating a lot of buzz but not all that positive. The problem that people are having with the film is that it seems to be s*xualizing young girls for entertainment.

The teen coming of age story centres on a group of teen girls who form a twerking dance group called Cuties. The main character, an 11-year-old Senegalese Muslim immigrant named Amy, secretly joins the dance group, defying her parents and their values.

Cuties is directed by Maïmouna Doucouré and stars Fathia Youssouf as Amy. The film’s IMDB synopsis read: “Amy, an 11-year-old girl joins a group of dancers named ‘the cuties’ at school, and rapidly grows aware of her burgeoning femininity – upsetting her mother and her values in the process.”

People noted that the Cuties has a TV-MA rating when checked on their phone but doesn’t show up on a desktop. TV-MA means that the programs are intended for mature, adult audiences and may be unsuitable for children under 17 (according to the FCC).

Given that movie is about 11-year-old girls, the TV-MA rating took many people by surprise. Now netizens are tweeting about it and trending TV-MA on Twitter. One user wrote, “ah corporate pedophillia, never gets old. just like their victims. seriously though NO one at netflix was like “maybe a show about little girls twerking and calling it cuties is a bad idea”. i hope this is actually a bait and switch but even then. what the hell.”

Another tweeted, “Netflix has a movie called “Cuties” about 11 year olds in a twerking dance group. Some of the reviews claim it’s a “commentary” on the s*xualization of children but this is the poster. And keep in mind that the lead actress is actually 11 years old. In the film and real life.

Here are some other reactions to the trailer of Cuties:

Someone has started a Change.org petition to remove Cuties from Netflix entirely. The creator of the petition wrote, “This movie/show is disgusting as it sexualizes an ELEVEN year old for the viewing pleasure of pedophiles and also negatively influences our children! There is no need for this kind of content in that age group, especially when sex trafficking and pedophilia are so rampant!”

Almost 5,000 people have signed at the time of publication.

Mignonnes aka Cuties premiered at Sundance and will be released by Netflix on September 9.
