Anurag Kashyap is a maverick filmmaker in every which way. His unique and out-of-the-box approach towards his films make them stand out. With ‘Manmarziyaan’, Anurag explores the genre of romance and how. The film is set in a timeless as well as a contemporary setting in the most well layered manner. It will destroy your meaning of love and leave you with a fresh approach towards romance.

Plot

Rumi (Taapsee Pannu) and Vicky (Vicky Kaushal) are in love and their meaning of romance comes down to sex. The two small town lovers cannot take their hands off each other; which is exactly when they get caught by Rumi’s parents. Just like any other small-town girl, Rumi too is forced by her family to get hitched. But their immaturity and commitment issues does let the two settle down, which is where Robbie (Abhishek Bachchan) enters the scene.

Robbie is a banker from London looking for an arranged alliance. Rumi, left with no choice, decides to marry Robbie. But will she get over her mad love with Vicky? And will Robbie be able to cop up with Rumi, inspite of knowing her past with Vicky?

Performances

Abhishek’s character is mature, full of dignity and manners. A character not everyone can pull-off, but Abhishek knows his work too well to not have done it with prowess. The actor gets into Robbie’s shoes so well, that you are fooled to believe Abhishek has been like Robbie all his life. He definitely proves his worth as an actor with this one. Taapsee is beautiful and a treat to watch in the film. She excels Rumi and her expressions leave us spell-bounded. ‘Manmarziyaan’ can easily be called Taapsee’s best performance till date. Vicky is on a roll and how. The actor is flawless playing a quintessential Punjabi lad with ease. He madness gets us and proves his commitment towards his character.

Direction and Cinematography

Anurag Kashyap’s direction is mature and fresh. He brings forth a love triangle that is complicated as well as relating in so many manners. His direction will make you cry and enlightened at the same time. Shot by Sylvester Fonseca and edited by Aarti Bajaj, the film scores well on the the technical aspects.

Music

The music of ‘Manmarziyaan’ have already been topping the music charts. Amit Trivedi does a fab job in expressing each character’s emotions through the songs. They are fitted at the right place and at the right time.

What’s Good

From the story-line, and performances, to Anurag’s taut direction, the film leaves an impact in your hearts. Inspite of being emotionally complex, the movie manages to leave you full with its sheer wisdom.

What’s Bad

The story might prove to be a little too deep for the young generation out there. The pace of the movie which runs slow in the first half, eventually gains momentum by the second.

Verdict

Not always, do we come across romantic movies that highlight the new age love, but also the long-lost old school romance. The movie is not just a love triangle, its more than just a guy and a girl meeting, its love with a different and matured approach. You might just not want to miss this one.
