Yaara Movie Review Rating: 2/5 Stars (Two stars)
Star Cast: Vidyut Jammwal, Amit Sadh, Vijay Varma, Kenny Basumatary, Sanjay Mishra Shruti Haasan
Director: Tigmanshu Dhulia
What’s Good: The actors and their performances.
What’s Bad: The four friends that lack friendship.
Loo Break: You will keep taking one when you wish to not pay attention to something you’ve seen many times.
Watch or Not?: If you are a fan of the actors, you will enjoy their performances. But it will also make you mad that right talent wasn’t given great characters.
User Rating:
It’s a story of 4 friends – Phagun (Vidyut Jammwal), Mitwa (Amit Sadh), Rizwan (Vijay Varma), and Bahadur (Kenny Basumatary). They are childhood friends who meet each other after an unfortunate tragedy takes place. From childhood to their youth, they work together for Chaukdi Gang. It’s during the 70s they become friends, goons and commit crimes together. However, something happens that changes their lives forever.
This significant change separates the four close friends who’ve grown up together doing notorious work for Chaukdi gang. While Phagun, Rizwan, and Bahadur live a better life, Mitwa hasn’t changed. He finds himself in huge trouble even 20 years later. So what happens when the trio finds out Mitwa is arrested? Well, you will have to watch it yourself (if you want to).
Yaara Movie Review: Script Analysis
The story is focused on four friends. However, even after showing their high and low moments, something is missing about their ‘strong’ friendship. It’s because the chemistry among them lack as friends. We do get some hilarious moments that we share with friends, but the aim to create an impact when they separate didn’t happen.
The concept of four childhood friends committing crimes together and having fun sounds interesting. But it’s overdone. Even the twists fail to astonish because you’ve seen it before in other movies or shows. The dialogues also fail to leave an impression.
Yaara Movie Review: Star Performance
For every performance I’ve seen of Vijay Varma, he has always won me. This time too, he shines. He mimics Bollywood’s superstar Amitabh Bachchan in the movie and smashes to the T. Amit Sadh, Sanjay Mishra, and Vidyut Jammwal, also give a good performance. It felt like they knew what they have to deliver, but their characters lacked depth. Shruti Haasan’s character is another favourite which I think was better written than the four leads.
Yaara Movie Review: Direction, Music
The movie is set in the 70s and 90s. Tigmanshu Dhulia tells us the story of these four boys in a non-linear way. The thing about the non-linear narration is if you nail it, you create a masterpiece. Otherwise, it becomes shabby to watch. What happened with Yaara is the latter. When you switch from past to present or vice-versa, you do it at a high point or curious moment. In the movie, the switch seemed quite random.
The film could’ve nailed it with breathtaking actions; however, it fails in that category too. The action sequences lacked punch. They were trying to show us how fights used to happen in that era, but it requires a knock that’s missing in the story and characters. There’s a warehouse scene where I hoped to see the four boys in full fighter mode. I was disappointed.
The songs in the movie are okay. However, when used in the background during the fight scene, it comes across as a complete mismatch. The beats are fast and powerful; sadly, the action scenes aren’t.
Yaara Movie Review: The Last Word
All said and done, Yaara has some good moments but many bad moments. PA story that had a lot of potentials to be a great movie turned out to be average. But you won’t be disappointed with the performances by any actor. So if you are a fan of either of them, give it a watch.
Two stars!
