Koimoi Recommends Khakee (Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru): Okay hear me out, Telugu films have been a celebration of their heroes, regardless of their surrounding. While, Khakee (Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru) isn’t a film that doesn’t fall in that category, but it is clever enough to have other things too. Today on Koimoi recommends I recommend you Karthi and Rakul Preet Singh (cameo to be honest) starrer Khakee. A film that actually begins on its 57th minute, but is an espionage thriller that deserves a watch.

A police officer who functions like a computer, well, his training montage says that, is up to solve a dreadful case. A series of murders and thefts by a group of dacoits puts a state in South of India in tension. Karthi as Dheeraj sets out on espionage to find this troop and an intriguing screenplay is laid.
Not gonna lie, Khakee actually begins after almost an hour. In this time we are taken through his police training, his struggle to convince Priya (Rakul Preet Singh) for marriage, montages of their lovemaking and so on. So disclaimer, sit through this first hour, because the next odd one and a half hour is a good ride.
As said before while celebrating the antagonist, Khakee also keeps a check on his surrounding. For example, the film for a brief part, will be correct to say for almost the second half, shifts to Rajasthan. Now Telugu audience in 2017 was not prepared for a shift in location for their cinema. On that note, writer-director H Vinoth, his art team and production designers don’t simplify the setup, rather they give a tribute to the landscape that it is set in.
What Khakee so does is question the system. Accurately shown and carefully executed, a sequence shows how the department is least cared when civilians are killed robbed and raped. But when an MLA is killed, it becomes a big thing to investigate.
Karthi plays Dheeraj, a cop who can never go wrong, the best in service. But all these traits when putting to good use don’t look caricatured. Rakul Preet Singh’s Priya though is an extended cameo and is adorable. Abhimanyu Singh as the baddie doesn’t really get to do much, but he shines in the limited frames.
Special mention to a scene when a complete village attacks Karthi and his team. The execution is intriguing. That brings me to the action, yes, there is a lot. While, the physics challenging action has its share, a more thoughtful technique also makes its way. From the aforementioned scene to the eagle way of attacking to the chases, everything keeps us hooked. Cinematographer Sathyan Sooryan deserves a huge chunk of this credit.
All in all Karthi starrer Khakee is a step in Telugu cinema that took it to an inclusive world. Watch it enjoy the espionage, and as said, sit through the first hour.
