17th July 2015 – This is the day when Salman Khan starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan hit the screens. Released a day before Eid, the film not just took an excellent start amongst the masses, it was also hailed by the critics and the masses. No wonder, this Kabir Khan directed affair ended up emerging as an all-time blockbuster and is remembered till date even after five years.
When Bajrangi Bhaijaan released, Salman Khan was on a winning streak with seven back to back centuries – Dabangg, Ready, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg 2, Jai Ho and Kick. All eyes were on the superstar to deliver. While each of the seven aforementioned films was an action affair, Bajrangi Bhaijaan was an out and out emotional tale. Also, Salman Khan had collaborated with director Kabir Khan on Ek Tha Tiger earlier and though it narrowly missed entering the 200 Crore Club by just 1 crore, Bajrangi Bhaijaan entered the 300 Crore Club though.
The story of Bajrangi Bhaijaan was written by Vijayendra Prasad, father of S.S. Rajamouli. The release of Bajrangi Bhaijaan was special for him since it followed the blockbuster success of Baahubali: The Beginning, which was written by him, directed by his son, and had released just a week back in theaters.

On its release across 4500 odd screens in India, the film took a very good start at the box office with Friday collections of 27.25 crores, even though it was pre-Eid. Moreover, Saturday and Sunday expectedly gained very good momentum, hence allowing Bajrangi Bhaijaan to enter the 100 Crore Club in just 3 days with the collections reading as 102.60 crores.
Though the film narrowly missed entering the 200 Crore Club in one week flat itself, it still ended up netting 184.62 crores in its first seven days. Moreover, it soon crossed the lifetime numbers of Salman Khan’s last release, Kick (a blockbuster again), which stood at 232 crores. In fact, the film went on to accumulate a lot more and ended up bringing in 321 crores.
As a matter of fact, this was only the second time in the history of Bollywood box office that a film had went past the 300 crores mark. Before that PK had achieved this feat a few months ago (in December 2014) when it gathered 340.80 crores at the box office. Bajrangi Bhaijaan came close to that but still fell short by almost 20 crores.
One of the most respected films ever starring Salman Khan, Bajrangi Bhaijaan was also graced with a National Award for being the Best Popular Film providing wholesome entertainment.
