After Daniel Radcliffe, Fantastic Beasts Actor Eddie Redmayne AKA Newt Scamander SLAMS JK Rowling Over Her Anti-Trans Tweet

Eddie Redmayne is undoubtedly one of the most amazing and talented actors we have in the world right now. His popularity doubled ever since we saw him portraying the character of Newt Scamander in JK Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts. The film also stars Johnny Depp in a pivotal role.

Recently, JK Rowling took to Twitter and expressed her views on Transgender women and since then there has been a continuous backlash on the Harry Potter author’s tweet. Popular queer people came out in open and are criticising and slamming the author.

Eddie Redmayne has already played the character of a transgender woman in his film ‘The Danish Girl’ and received an Oscar nomination for the same. The Fantastic Beast actor is now speaking up against Rowling’s take on the same after Harry Potter actor, Daniel Radcliffe.

In an interview with Variety, Eddie Redmayne said, “Respect for transgender people remains a cultural imperative, and over the years I have been trying to constantly educate myself.”

He further added, “As someone who has worked with both J.K. Rowling and members of the trans community, I wanted to make it absolutely clear where I stand,” he continued. “I disagree with Jo’s comments. Trans women are women, trans men are men and non-binary identities are valid. I would never want to speak on behalf of the community but I do know that my dear transgender friends and colleagues are tired of this constant questioning of their identities, which all too often results in violence and abuse. They simply want to live their lives peacefully, and it’s time to let them do so.”

For the unversed, here’s Rowling’s tweet which caused a stir on social media:

“If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth,” Rowling wrote. “The idea that women like me, who’ve been empathetic to trans people for decades, feeling kinship because they’re vulnerable in the same way as women — ie, to male violence — ‘hate’ trans people because they think sex is real and has lived consequences — is a nonsense.”

It’s really brave of the actors to come out and address such strong issues in public.
