Harry Potter Movies: Alan Rickman Had Almost Quit Playing Professor Severus Snape, Here’s How JK Rowling Stopped Him

Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was Harry Potter universe. The moviegoers used to impatiently wait for the films on the magical world of Hogwarts based on JK Rowling’s books. HP gave us some amazing characters and actors who portrayed them. One of them was Alan Rickman who played Professor Severus Snape.

In the first 5 Harry Potter films, Professor Severus Snape was shown arrogant, harsh and someone who hates Harry. But in the 6th film ‘Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince’, the makers surprised us. Snape never hated Harry but he was always protecting him. All the credit for the beautiful acting skills goes to Alan Rickman as he played the character with honesty. But did you know Alan was going to quit HP movies? Read on what happened.

After being a part of 2 Harry Potter films, Alan Rickman didn’t feel like returning to play Professor Severus Snape. About the same, in 2011, he told Empire magazine, “I have just returned from the dubbing studio where I spoke into a microphone as Severus Snape for absolutely the last time. On the screen were some flashback shots of Daniel, Emma and Rupert from ten years ago. They were 12. I have also recently returned from New York, and while I was there, I saw Daniel singing and dancing (brilliantly) on Broadway. A lifetime seems to have passed in minutes.”

He further added, “Three children have become adults since a phone call with JK Rowling, containing one small clue, persuaded me that there was more to Snape than an unchanging costume and that even though only three of the books were out at that time, she held the entire massive but delicate narrative in the surest of hands. It is an ancient need to be told stories. But the story needs a great storyteller. Thanks for all of it, Jo.”

Alan said that when told Rowling about quitting Harry Potter films, she shared something important with him about his character. That’s when he realized there’s more to Snape and he was more complicated than what was shown. The actor had told Hitfix, “If you remember when I did the first film she’d only written three or four books, so nobody knew where it was really going except her. And it was important for her that I know something, but she only gave me a tiny piece of information which helped me think it was a more ambiguous route.”

On Twitter, a fan asked JK Rowling what was that tiny piece of information she gave to Alan. The author revealed, “I told Alan what lies behind the word ‘always’. “

Everyone who watched these Harry Potter movies knows what importance the world ‘Always’ has. Before ‘I Love You, 3000’, people used ‘always’ to tell someone how much they love the other person.
