Chris Evans Opens Up On Taking Up Captain America’s Role After Talking To His Family, Robert Downey Jr & Therapist

Chris Evans made his entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2011 with the film, Captain America: The First Avenger. His character Steve Rogers or Cap won millions of hearts from the first film itself. We all know Chris was reluctant to play Cap’s role when he was first offered. There were a lot of reasons for him to say no as he had anxiety when he was offered the superhero character.

In a podcast of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter, Chris Evans shared how he had declined the role multiple times. But Marvel President Kevin Feige wanted him to play Captain America and hence, he never gave up. The Defending Jacob actor spoke about the offer with his family, friends and even his therapist. When Chris finally said yes, the actor couldn’t stop overthinking after the release of the first film.

The actor said, “That’s why in the whole first movie my hair was on fire. You’re so scared. I was like I can’t believe I’m doing it. Please don’t backfire, please don’t blow up in my face. Not only did it not, but it is also the best decision I’ve ever made.” Chris Evans also shared how his Avengers: Endgame co-star Robert Downey Jr aka Iron Man helped him deal with the confusions he had while taking up the role.

Chris Evans shared, “We had the same agent at that time. I knew where they wanted to go and that’s part of the initial deal. It’s not just for Captain America, there Avengers movies and that was daunting. Just hearing him give that little nudge of encouragement. It just made me feel I’m part of the gang and not so intimidated.”

But Chris Evans also couldn’t stop worrying about his performance compared to Robert Downey Jr’s Iron. The Fantastic Four actor added, “This guy, he is crushing this role and I don’t want to be the weak link here. But again, it was a nice comforting thing that he was in my corner.”

Evans also said that he is grateful to Kevin Feige for helping him to not make a giant mistake of rejecting Captain America’s role. Meanwhile, with Avengers: Endgame, Chris Evans’ journey as Captain America came to an end. His contract ended last year. Along with him, even RDJ won’t play Iron Man anymore in the MCU.
